I think depression is a bitch.

And when your in that state of mind you dont want to hear someone preach about ’seeing things in a hppy view’, its just going to bring you down even more.
However that being said i dont think its something that should be solved with medication, it really shows how this generation is always looking for a quick fix, something easy.

Depends on the person….I am bipolar and when I get depressed, it is NOT a state of mind, believe me. Good question, though.

Exercise releases chemicals in your body which make you happier. I always feel much better after working out.

Also, eating a healthy/balanced diet it really useful. Along with that, there are certain supplements that help with depression – such as a simple multi-vitamin or fish oil.

Yes, it’s a state of mind. Medications will not help if you are in a rock bottom situation. You need to find solution for the problem.
For example, if you are depressed because you are broke, finding a job will cure your depressive state rather than taking pills but have no job.

A number of years ago I also thought that depression could be “shaken off” by distracting myself and keeping busy, etc……until I reached the point where I was watching a comedy on TV one night and all of a sudden I started to cry (for no reason….the show was funny)…and I cried continuously all night and through the next day…until (partly because it was scaring my children, and partly because I had no idea what I was crying about) I gave in and called an emergency mental health number. They told me to come in immediately, after hearing me on the phone. I was screened, put on anti-depressants, and assigned weekly ‘cognitave therapy’ sessions. It took 18 months of hard work to crawl back up of the black hole I was in, but I would not have gotten so deeply depresssed if I had gone for help before I completely fell apart. I have always been a very strong person, and at point had been through many burdensom and tragic situations but I always believed that I could pull myself together – indeed, I had to, because I had my children to care for….but at some point my body got to the point where it rebelled and just told me it wasn’t going to continue the way things were going. Should I ever become depressed again (I doubt that I will, and pray it never happens) I would seek help as soon as I recognized the symptoms. People who haven’t been severely depressed believe that you can just ’shake it off’ – I had people tell me that “they get depressed too”….what they meant is that they had “bad days”….depression is far more than just having a “bad day”! If you are depressed, please get yourself evaluated….you may not need medication…maybe just some counseling….but please don’t try to cure it yourself ~
